What a fabulous year in D109! On to third grade!
What a fabulous year in D109! On to third grade!
Next week, we will be learning:
Math
Students have completed their last unit of second grade math! For the remainder of the school year, we'll work on extra fun math mystery puzzles that review many concepts from the year.
Phonics
We'll continue reviewing past phonics unit lessons and integrate solo/partner phonics games.
Writing
We are creating writing portfolios that will go home next week! Students reflected on everything we've learned throuhgout the year and will finish their cover pages today.
Thematic
Students had a blast working together in teams to go through the engineering process and construct marshmallow towers! We will not have any thematic activities next week. This time will be replaced with reading activities and games!
Language Arts
No ELA next week. This time will also be replaced with reading activities and games!

Notes from Ms. Kleinman
Families,
If I may wax poetic for a moment… I want to make sure you know how special this class has been to me in a year when I faced some very difficult personal challenges. The students I met back in August have become the greatest team a teacher could ever hope for. I watched them demonstrate patience, compassion, and understanding for their peers with special needs. I witnessed students cheer each other on and encourage others to do their best nearly every day. This is the best job in the world and I consider myself lucky that there wasn’t a day when I woke up dreading to come to work. We have so much fun in this magical classroom and each student has grown in the most tremendous ways. We looked back this week at our very first writing activity of the school year and our jaws dropped when we saw how we’re writing stories using both the front and back pages! We’ve got math wizards everywhere and readers who continue to try their best with the most positive attitudes I’ve encountered. I just want to recognize how wonderful you all are for raising these kind, hilarious, and unique children. I can’t wait to watch them grow into third grade and beyond. They’re going to do amazing things in this world! Please don’t hesitate to keep in touch. I’m around for any baseball games, karate events, recitals… you name it! I hope everyone has a fun, celebratory summer! These kiddos deserve it all.
Also, I know the time is a bit late, but for whoever is up for it- as a movie lover, I will be seeing the new Toy Story movie at the West Wind Drive-In Theatre (off Bradshaw) on Saturday, June 20th at 9pm! Feel free to bring the family and enjoy the movie as a fun summer kickoff with me! I’ll be camped next to my white Jetta if you decide to join!

As the school year draws to a close, it's a good time to think about ways to help students maintain the skills and knowledge they have gained throughout the year. Just like an unused muscle, the academic skills your child worked hard to develop this year can weaken without occasional practice.
Here are a few suggestions for making summer practice successful:
- Make it consistent: Choose a regular time most days of the week for academic practice, such as after breakfast or around 4:00 p.m.
- Keep it brief: Select a length of time that fits your child's temperament and maturity level. For many students, 20–30 minutes is a reasonable daily goal.
- Provide limited choices: Giving children some choice can increase motivation and participation. For example: "Would you like to do your summer practice after dinner or after breakfast?"
- Set goals: Ask your child what they think they can accomplish during their practice time that day. Having a voice in the process often increases engagement.
- Reward effort: Simple tools like work completion charts can help children see their progress. Families often find success pairing these with small rewards, such as, "Earn four stickers and choose what's for dinner!"
