9th Grade Literature Milestones Preparation
The test is Monday, April 22 and Tuesday, April 23.
On this page, you will find information about the test, your review assignments, and videos to help you with IXL.
The state has provided a study guide here. We will be completing some of it in class, but you are welcome to work through it on your own.
The 9th Grade Literature has four main topics:
- Reading Fiction
- Stories, narratives, poetry, and drama
- Reading Nonfiction
- Informational and historical texts
- Language and Vocabulary
- Grammar, revisions, research, and vocabulary
- Writing
- All students will compose a full-length essay based on two articles that they will read.
- The essay will either be:
- Argumentative - Forming an opinion based on the articles and using them as evidence
- Informative - Evaluating which article is better or synthesizing the material in the article to inform the reader
The test is given in two parts over two days:
- Day 1: 1 full-length essay. Students will read 2 articles, answer 2-3 multiple choice questions, 1 short answer question, and then write a full-length essay (at least 5 paragraphs) to answer the prompt. This will either be informative or argumentative. Students will receive different essays. Remember to cite evidence from BOTH articles.
- Day 2: 50-45 reading fiction, reading literary, language, and vocabulary questions. This portion has several reading passages. It is mostly multiple choice, but students will answer 1-2 paragraph response questions and write 1 short narrative passage.
The best way to review for a test like this is simply to read, read, and read. Most of the IXLs assigned for review are reading passages with comprehension questions. In order to use IXL to review, you can click on the links below. All students will be required to complete these exercises for a graded review.
To make the most of your review:
- Begin at grade 9 or level K.
- If that is too hard, go down a level or two.
- Once you have completed level K, you can go up a level!
- You can also complete more IXLs for extra credit. See my suggested extra credit IXLs below.
D3 - Analyze short stories
