Instrumental Music Teacher
The Instrumental Music Teacher shall help each participating student achieve a high level of skill in playing an appropriate musical instrument and acquire a knowledge of the fundamentals of music while participating in concerts, contests and other public appearances.
This is a general description. If the position is divided by grade level, the teacher should carry out any of the following activities that apply to his/her grade level(s).
Position Description (In addition to Classroom Teacher)
1. Work closely with principal(s) in scheduling band concerts, contests, marching and pep band appearances and trips;
2. Provide each student an opportunity to try out, participate and practice in the instrumental musical activity of his/her choice;
3. Plan, schedule and supervise student participation in pep and marching band, large and small group contests, individual contests, concerts and auxiliary band groups (majorette, flags, etc.);
4. Supervise and conduct fund drives that have been approved by the principal and School Board;
5. Cooperate and work closely with band booster organizations;
6. Supervise the promotion of concerts and ticket sales;
7. Conduct individual instrumental music lessons;
8. Develop the musical talents of each student to his/her fullest;
9. Responsible for all matters pertaining to the organization and administration of the instrumental music program and enforce all SDHSAA rules as necessary;
10. Conduct a general meeting with all instrumental music participants at the beginning of the year to review practice schedules, school and music departments rules, etc.;
11. Arrange out-of-town trips with principal(s) at least one week in advance of the trip;
12. Conform to school policy in ordering equipment and supplies for the instrumental program;
13. Assume responsibility for conduct of participants;
14. Responsible for care and storage of equipment;
15. Direct and develop the high school concert band, marching band, and pep band;
16. Provide music groups to perform for community functions that are in the best interests of the students and school and approved by principal(s);
17. Perform at high school functions when required by the principal;
18. Promote the activities of the group in the newspaper and media;
19. Schedule instrumental activities through the principal(s) before the beginning of the school term.
