Bacood is a community located on the banks of the Pasig and San Juan rivers, away from the busy and congested streets of Manila's Santa Mesa district. It can be described as a subdistrict or small community. The name Bacood is derived from the Tagalog term "bakood," which can refer to either a raised land or a plantation of cane. Historical records indicate that during that time period, the land functioned as a plantation where a variety of crops were cultivated. However, during its initial period, Bacood was referred to as Cordeleria, which is a Spanish phrase denoting a store specializing in the sale of ropes. This was due to the fact that during that time, the location served as the primary hub for the production and trade of ropes in Manila and its neighboring suburbs. An individual who possessed a business of this nature was Sancho Valenzuela, a member of the Katipunan. Valenzuela subsequently spearheaded an unsuccessful attack against the Spanish forces during the onset of the Philippine Revolution in 1896, ultimately becoming one of the initial casualties and symbols of the Revolution. The street leading to Bacood is now named in honor of his memory.
