History Colorado's Centennial Farm & Ranches program honors families that meet the following criteria:
Farms or ranches must have remained in the same family continuously for 100 years or more.
Property must be a working farm or ranch.
Property must have a minimum of 160 acres -- however, properties with fewer than 160 acres can qualify if they gross at least $1,000 in annual sales.
Properties that have four or more well-maintained buildings/structures -- which are at least 50 years old -- may be eligible for a Historic Structures Award.

Conducted in 2008-2009 by Front Range Research Associates, and funded through the State Historical Fund, this project included a reconnaissance survey of all resources constructed 1968 and earlier within the county’s incorporated communities of Eads, Haswell, and Sheridan Lake. An additional fifty properties identified as high priority resources were also intensively surveyed and evaluated for potential eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places, State Register of Historic Properties, and the Kiowa County Historic Register. This survey has helped guide historic preservation efforts in the county.
In 2012, Front Range Research Associates completed a historic context and survey plan of the Pleasant Hill (Towner) Bus Tragedy. The project was funded by a grant from the Certified Local Government Program of History Colorado.
In 2018, the KCHPC received a grant from the State Historic Fund to continue research about the physical buildings associated with the Pleasant Hill (Towner) Bus Tragedy. Historians Thomas H. and R. Laurie Simmons of Front Range Research Associates, Inc. completed the selective intensive survey, which resulted in preparation of seven Architectural Inventory forms for resources in Kiowa and Prowers counties.
