Digital Etiquette
Digital etiquette is the responsibility for your actions on the internet. Do not treat people differently because they are on the internet and not in person. Make sure to always respect others, follow the rules of the website you are on, and be kind to others.
You should follow a basic set of rules to make the internet a better place for yourself and for others. Just like how there are rules of etiquette in real life, there are also rules you should follow while online.
1. Don't use language that could be taken as offensive.
2. When writing, stay on topic.
3. Review two times before you send.
4. Don't act differently in an online class because it is still a class.
5. Know the language and key words used on the internet.
6. Respect the privacy of others.
7. Do not send, forward, or post inappropriate material.
Example #1
A student is having a hard time solving a math problem, so they decide to search YouTube for some help!
They look up "How to do long division" on YouTube and many videos pop up!
They try the first video, but it is hard to understand. The creator's video is not explained well and just very unorganized.
It makes the student so mad that he decides to comment on the video and tell the creator how he feels.
This is not good digital etiquette!! The student should avoid commenting anything negative, even if they are upset with the video!
Example #2
There is a pandemic going on and classes got moved to Zoom!
The students must log in to class each day to go to school.
The teacher notices one student eating while in the Zoom and two other students giggling.
She asks them to stop, but a little while later they are doing it again.
This is not good digital etiquette!! The students should act how they would in an in person classroom even if school is online!
Follow all of the same classroom rules!
