Digital Citizenship is the rules we follow in order to appropriately use the internet and online resources!
When using online resources, we must remember:
To lead and assist others in building positive digital experiences!
To recognize that our actions have consequences to others!
To participate in a manner for the common good!
The Nine Elements of Digital Citizenship!
The ability for ALL students to use technology. It is important to remember that not everyone has access to the internet. There should be multiple options provided so that activities and homework can be completed at home. These options can be things like free access to the internet in the community or a take home computer/iPad.
Buying and selling goods electronically through the internet. There are tools that help keep people safe when they are buying, selling, banking, or using money on the internet.
Digital Communication and Collaboration
People talking and giving information through electronics. People can share their thoughts, talk to each other, give out information, and more. This can be helpful for students or people who are having a hard time expressing themselves.
The responsibility for your actions on the internet. Do not treat people differently because they are on the internet and not in person. Make sure to always respect others, follow the rules of the website you are on, and be kind to others.
Understanding how to use technology. When a person understands how to use technology well, they are more likely to make good decisions on the internet. This includes being kind to others instead of making mean comments. Digital fluency also means having digital literacy, which is being able to tell the difference between good information and fake information.
The physical and mental well being of someone who uses the internet. Technology gives us a lot of great opportunities and ways to be entertained, but a person needs to know how much of it to use and what to use in order to have a healthy life. For students, it is important to know how much screen time is allowed each day.
Just like the real world, the internet had to make laws so that people online can stay safe. Digital Law is a person's responsibility online for their actions and following the rules. Cyberbullying is a violation of digital law and students who come across it online can speak about it with their teacher or school counselor.
Digital Rights and Responsibility
The freedom and rules that must be followed by people on the internet. It is important for students to understand that when they are able to use the internet they need to be sure that they are helping others as well as themselves. This means that if they come across a problem, they tell an adult so it can be fixed. Teachers must help students understand that protecting others online and in the real world is important.
Precautions to make sure the internet is safe. Viruses and bots can be given to a computer or electronic so easily. When using devices in school or at home, it is important to understand and be aware of how viruses and bots can attack and how it can be prevented.
