I teach 5th grade Math/Science. The Rice Summer Inquiry Institute motivated me to look at my traditional science labs and activities through a different lens. I was able to transform most activities into more student-led discovery activities. Additionally, while working on district curriculum writing I was able to introduce inquiry based activities across different grade levels.
Activities like Ice Balloons, Bungee Barbie, and the Heat Loss Project (Rice Stemletics Aacademy) encourage students to adopt more of a growth mindset. By learning from mistakes and thinking outside the box students are more engaged; and take ownership of their learning.
