Memories are glimmers of images, emotions, artifacts, and events that swirl in both the heart and mind. These memories overlap and certain details slip away as quickly as they are remembered. Photographs aid in the recollection of life's events. These images reflect a moment recorded in a fraction of a second through the click of a shutter. As time passes, we look back on photographs differently. Each photographic moment can be perceived as a positive or a negative representation based on the viewer’s life experience and personal history. My mixed media collection of work is a representation of my own intertwined experiences captured through the lens of my camera. The foundation of the work is based in photography as a broad concept. I explore the mechanics of a camera, how to compose an image inside of the viewfinder, photographic materials themselves, the push and pull of the foreground, middle ground, and background. Through the act of collage and weaving materials together I have begun to create my own visual language. In the collage work, each layer, mark, and image has personal meaning. The act of layering helps to manage the chaotic moments that come. When working in collage I create a background that is not intended to be visible when the work is completed. This gives me the freedom to express the emotion and visual language that I do not want to share on the surface. The act of covering enables me to hide the things I am hoping to avoid. Most often it results in chaos that is waiting to be tamed. My final layers often include a series of very straight, superimposed lines. These lines are an attempt to bring order to the chaos that has been present
