• Department of Chemistry has a long history at Howard University. The Department began in 1867 with Silas Loomis, who was one of the founders of Howard University, as the first Professor of Chemistry and Toxicology.

• On Jan. 25th, 1955, Chemistry Department requested approval for the Ph.D. program at Howard University. The program was granted by the Board on December 14th, 1955. This was the first Ph.D. program at Howard University.

• In 1958, the Department of Chemistry produced its own first two Ph.D. recipients, Harold Delaney and Bibhuti Mazumder. They were also the first Ph.D. recipients from Howard University.

•To date, Howard University is one of only 48 U.S. private, doctoral/research-extensive universities and produces more on-campus African American Ph.D. than any other university in the world.
