What is band like at Kilmer?
At Kilmer, band is one of the largest organization in the school. Approximately 300 students participate in one of 5 different band classes. In middle school, band meets 2-3 times per week for 85 minutes so you improve very quickly on your instrument. Each of the classes focuses on improving your technical ability and preparing fun music for 2 to 5 performances a year (depending on what band you are in).
What about the Kilmer Band’s reputation?
The Kilmer Band program is recognized as one of the finest middle school music organizations in Fairfax County. Our top band has been selected to perform at the Virginia Music Educators Conference, attended by thousands of music teachers. The band is regarded by the Kilmer community as one of the school’s greatest assets and has received praise from local and state government officials, college band directors and parents of current and former students.
What if I don’t play a band instrument?
You don’t have to play an instrument to join band! Kilmer has a great beginning band class where we teach you all the basics about music and the instrument you choose. Beginning Band students at Kilmer quickly catch up with students who started in elementary school.
What band class will I be in?
Kilmer has several different levels of band, from beginning to intermediate and advanced. After a short video audition for Ms. Bonneau (no video for beginners), you will be placed in a class that is appropriate for your ability level. This means that your class will be full of students who play their instrument at a similar level to you, so we can tailor instruction to help you improve as quickly as possible!
What is this trip I keep hearing about?
Each spring, the band has a day of clinics with a collegiate-level conductor, followed by a day at an amusement park (like Busch Gardens and Hershey Park!). You get to miss school and enjoy the day at the amusement park with your friends! This has become a tradition that band students look forward to every year.
If I’m in band, will I have time for……
Yes, you’ll have time to continue with other activities and academics. Students in the Kilmer Band are some of the strongest academic students in the school and often participate in several other activities like travel sports, after-school clubs, the school musical production, academic teams, and much more.
How do I register for band?
This one is important!!! The band classes have no size limit, so everyone gets into band. However, when you select your classes for Kilmer, you need to put band as your “1st choice” elective to guarantee that the student services department places you in band. If you’ve never played, sign up for beginning band. If you have experience, sign up for the intermediate level.
