Your blood travels through the dialysis machine, where waste and extra water are removed.

Often, patients receive medication during the session:
EPO (erythropoietin): Helps your body make red blood cells. It is used to treat anemia, which can make you feel tired and weak.
Heparin: Helps prevent blood from clotting in the dialysis tubes and filter during treatment.
Iron: Helps your body make healthy red blood cells. Some patients receive iron through their dialysis access.
Not every patient receives all three, and doses depend on their medical needs.Â
Dialyzer (artificial kidney)
The filter that cleans your blood.
Blood pump
Keeps your blood moving through the dialysis machine.
Dialysis fluid
A special liquid that helps remove waste and balance minerals in your blood.
Diffusion
Waste moves from your blood into the dialysis fluid through a thin membrane.
Blood lines
Tubes that carry blood to the dialyzer and back to your body.
