Our walking group runs walks on the first and third Friday of each month. Four times a year we have a fifth Friday in the month walk and we try to run something farther afield during the summer months when the weather is better.
Walks are organised by members of the group who plan and arrange a lunch stop where possible. Our walks are generally of 5 to 6 miles in length and there is nearly always the option of a shorter 3 mile walk available.
Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier.
Sometimes overlooked as a form of exercise, walking briskly can help you build stamina, burn excess calories and make your heart healthier.
Walking in a group is a great way to start walking, make new friends and stay motivated. We always have room for new members.

Denise Kirwan and Margaret Wattham led 2 walks from The Kings Head in Smeeton Westerby.
Splendid weather and firm underfoot made for enjoyable walking conditions. It looks like its going to get hotter soon.
Excellent pub grub too. They always look after us at the King's Head.

Mike Senior led a much reduced number of us from Gumley over Smeeton Gorse to Smeeton Westerby and then back by Gumley Wood for lunch at The Bell in Gumley.
Julie led the short walk to Foxton for a coffee stop at the bottom lock before returning for lunch.
The weather for the day was very good with a gentle breeze and not too hot.

Stephen and Barbara put on 2 walks starting from the Shoulder of Mutton in Great Bowden. 22 members of the walking group took part. The longer walk was 5 miles long with a total ascent of 189 feet. Some of the stiles en route were a bit rickety and are in need of replacement.
The route took us along Main Street to pick up the northerly footpath towards the Grand Union Canal. A gentle walk by the canal took us to the B6047. Crossing this road we joined the footpath which runs down to the A6. We then followed this path east until we met the Langton Road where we turned right and walked up to the footpath under the railway which took us back to Great Bowden.
Many thanks to Stephen and Barbara.

24 members of the Walking Group set off on 2 walks from the Bell Inn at Gumley.
The short walk was of some 4 miles and narrowly avoided some stiles but took in some steep climbs on the way to Foxton Locks. The walk included a stop for coffee.
The longer walk headed off towards Laughton over some beautiful countryside liberally speckled with buttercups. A banana stop in Laughton was followed by a circuit of the village before returning to Gumley for lunch. The was a sting in the tail for the long walkers as the ascent into Gunley is pretty steep..
