The iTag Mode is the standard operating mode of KEYSTARTER.

It combines maximum comfort with clear, controllable security.

Your iTag or a compatible smartwatch serves as your personal digital key – no app, no internet, no cloud. 

🔑 How Start Authorization Works in iTag Mode

Start authorization occurs **only** by deliberately pressing the handlebar button.

KEYSTARTER never starts automatically. 

Step-by-Step Process

🔘 Press the start button
Only at this moment does KEYSTARTER activate the Bluetooth scan.

📡 Targeted search (up to 10 seconds)
The system searches for up to 10 seconds for an authorized iTag.
In most cases, detection occurs after about 3–4 seconds.

🔓 Ignition release
If a valid key is detected, the ignition circuit is enabled.

🔊 Audible confirmation
1× BEEP = iTag detected, ignition ready 

➡️ No constant scanning, no unnecessary radio signals, no battery drain when parked. 

If No iTag is Detected

• After 10 seconds, the search ends automatically, and the start button becomes inactive.

Retry:
➝ Release the start button
➝ Press again 

Tips for Optimal Detection

• Keep the iTag close to the motorcycle 

• Preferably at the front (jacket, pants, near tank, or handlebars).

• Avoid placing directly behind large metal surfaces or deep inside a backpack 

👥 Multi-User – Up to 4 iTag Keys

• Register up to 4 iTags or compatible smartwatches

📏 Adjustable Detection Range

The Bluetooth detection range can be fine-tuned via the local web server. 

You decide whether: 

• The key must be very close to the motorcycle 

• Or can be comfortably detected in jacket, pants, or backpack 

➡️ More comfort or more security – your choice. 

Note:
The range is deliberately limited by default and can be increased if needed –
without constant scanning and without reducing security.

In Phone Mode, your smartphone becomes the authorization key for your motorcycle.
This mode is ideal if you don’t want to carry an additional iTag or want to share your bike easily and securely. 

No app. No internet. No cloud.
Authorization occurs entirely locally between your smartphone and KEYSTARTER. 

📱 How Start Authorization Works in Phone Mode 

Phone Mode is activated once via the web server and remains active until you change it. 

Step-by-Step Process 

• 🔘 Press the start button
  Press the KEYSTARTER button on the handlebar. 

• 📶 Protected Wi-Fi starts
  The module starts a password-protected Wi-Fi named
  “KEYSTARTER PHONE”. 

• 📱 Connect smartphone
  Connect your smartphone to this Wi-Fi. 

• 🔓 Ignition authorization
  Once connected, the ignition circuit is enabled. 

• 🔊 Audible confirmation
  1× BEEP = smartphone detected, ignition ready 

➡️ You can now start your motorcycle as usual. 

🔐 Automatic Wi-Fi shutdown (security feature) 

Immediately after successful start authorization, the Wi-Fi shuts off automatically. 

This means: 

• No constantly visible Wi-Fi 

• No open hotspot while riding 

• Protection against unauthorized access 

• Maximum power efficiency

⚙️ Maintenance & Settings Access in Phone Mode 

Since the Wi-Fi shuts off automatically after start authorization, there is a separate maintenance access for settings.

To enter settings mode: 

• 🔘 Press the start button 

• 📵 Do not connect immediately 

• ⏱️ After approx. 60 seconds, 2× BEEP-BEEP sounds 

• 📶 Now connect to “KEYSTARTER PHONE” 

• 🌐 Open 192.168.4.1 in a browser and log in

🛡️ Two Operating Behaviors for Your Security 

In the web server, you can decide how strictly KEYSTARTER should perform its checks.
Both variants intentionally work **without continuous monitoring** and **without interference while riding**.

1️⃣ Standard Detection (Focus: Comfort) 

This setting is ideal for everyday use and daily commuting. 

How it works: 

• Single check at start
  When the start button is pressed, KEYSTARTER checks once whether an authorized iTag is present.

• Permanent authorization
  If the iTag is detected, the ignition remains active.

• Manual control
  At the end of your ride, you consciously switch the motorcycle off again using the button.

2️⃣ Security Detection (Focus: Theft Protection) 

This setting increases protection against unauthorized vehicle takeover. 

How it works: 

• First check at start
  Identical to the standard detection. 

• Automatic second check after 30 seconds
  Exactly 30 seconds after start authorization, KEYSTARTER performs a second iTag scan in the background.

• Safe shutdown if out of range
  If the iTag is no longer detected during this check, KEYSTARTER safely switches off the ignition.
  
  

Protection effect: 

• ➝ Equivalent to turning the ignition key to “OFF” 

• ➝ Prevents unauthorized removal of the vehicle 

Advantages:

KEYSTARTER makes decisions only at clearly defined moments – controlled, predictable, and transparent.

🆘 Emergency Start via Smartphone (Correct Procedure) 

The emergency start is used when no registered iTag is available
(e.g. lost, battery empty, or intentionally kept out of range). 

1️⃣ Initiate the Start Process as Usual 

(iTag must NOT be nearby) 

• Press the KEYSTARTER button on the handlebar normally, just like a standard start attempt. 

• No authorized iTag must be within range. 

• No special holding, no special button, no hidden mode. 

➡️ KEYSTARTER automatically detects: No key present. 

2️⃣ Automatic Security Sequence (30 Seconds Total) 

This sequence runs fully automatically: 

🔍 iTag Search – 10 Seconds 

• KEYSTARTER searches for exactly 10 seconds for a registered iTag. 

• iTag detected → Normal operation, no emergency mode. 

• No iTag detected → Preparation for emergency access.

• ⏳ Security Waiting Phase – 20 Seconds 

• Fixed waiting time as protection against accidental activation. 

• During this time, Wi-Fi is NOT active.

•  🔊 Release Signal 

• After a total of 30 seconds, two beeps (🔊🔊) will sound. 

• Meaning: 

  • Webserver is active

  • Wi-Fi has started.
    
    

3️⃣ Connect Smartphone 

• Select the Wi-Fi network "KEYSTARTER iTag" on your smartphone. 

• If the password is already saved, the connection is automatic. 

4️⃣ Access Webserver & Login 

• Open your browser. 

• Enter address: 192.168.4.1 

• Login with password. 

5️⃣ Release Engine 

• Tap on 🔘 Motor ON in the web interface. 

• The ignition is released. 

• The motorcycle can now be started normally. 

🔄 Automatic Return to Normal Operation 

• The motorcycle is turned off later via the button on the handlebars. 

• At the next start with an iTag in range: 

  • Immediate recognition 

  • No Wi-Fi 

  • No Webserver 

  • No login
    
    

➡️ KEYSTARTER automatically returns to standard iTag operation. 

 ➡️ No reset, no settings required. 

🔐 Security Logic (Clear & Honest) 

• The Webserver ONLY starts if no iTag is detected. 

• If an iTag is in range: 

  • ❌ No Wi-Fi 

  • ❌ No two beeps 

  • ❌ No Webserver 

• Wi-Fi is NOT active while riding.
  
  

⚠️ Note for Settings via Webserver 

If you want to change settings (e.g., range or mode): 

• Move the iTag out of range (approx. 10–15 m)
  OR

• place the iTag in a metal box / shielding 

• Then press the KEYSTARTER button.

Local Control Instead of Cloud Dependency 

KEYSTARTER works entirely offline.
All decisions (release, security, time windows) are made directly within the control unit. 

What this means for you: 

• No background servers 

• No external dependencies 

• No data tracking

• Works everywhere—even without cellular reception 

Integrated Webserver (Only When Needed) 

KEYSTARTER features an integrated webserver that is activated exclusively for configuration. 

The webserver only starts: 

• If no iTag is detected 

• OR after a deliberate user action 

During this time, KEYSTARTER generates a local Wi-Fi network .

KEYSTARTER is not a toy gadget, but a robust vehicle system designed for everyday use.

KEYSTARTER uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and operates with permanently registered device identities.
The deciding factor is not signal strength, but a stable Bluetooth Address (MAC). 

Only devices with a consistent MAC address can be used permanently and securely as keys. 

Which devices are compatible? 

Generally suitable are: 

• iTags with a fixed BLE MAC address 

• BLE-enabled smartwatches without MAC rotation 

• Budget trackers with simple BLE hardware 

• Smartwatches that do not change their identity regularly
  
  

⚠️ Not automatically compatible: 

• Many brand-name smartwatches (e.g., Apple, Samsung) 

• Devices with active Privacy MAC Roaming 

• Trackers that change their address cyclically
  
  

⌚ Smartwatch as a Digital Key 

KEYSTARTER can register a smartwatch directly just like an iTag. 

Recommended: 

• ✅ Amazfit Smartwatches

  • Very stable BLE address 

  • Simply set to "Discoverable" in the Zepp app 

  • Excellent for continuous operation
    
    

Also possible: 

• ✅ Many budget smartwatches

• Often use simple chipsets 

• Frequently feature fixed MAC addresses 

Not suitable (usually): 

• ❌ Apple Watch / Samsung Galaxy Watch

• Rotating Bluetooth addresses for privacy reasons 

• No permanent identity → no secure release 

🔍 What is the nRF Check exactly? 

The nRF Check is not a hardware test, but an identity check. 

It is performed using the free smartphone app "nRF Connect" and shows: 

• Detected BLE devices 

• Their MAC addresses 

• Whether the address remains stable
  
  

KEYSTARTER stores exactly this address. 

If it changes, the start is deliberately refused. 

🧪 How to Test Your Device Correctly (Pro Check) 

1️⃣ First Scan 

• Install the "nRF Connect" app. 

• Start the scan. 

• Note the MAC address (e.g., 00:A1:B2:...). 

2️⃣ Waiting Period 

• Wait 15–20 minutes. 

• Important, as many devices change their address after a delay. 

3️⃣ Restart Test 

• Turn the device completely off & back on. 

• Toggle Bluetooth on your smartphone off/on briefly. 

4️⃣ Second Scan 

• Scan again with nRF Connect.
  
  

Result: 

• ✔ Address identical → Perfect for KEYSTARTER. 

• ❌ Address changed → Device not suitable. 

Why is this check so important? 

KEYSTARTER stores a unique identity—no names, no cloud, no profiles. 

If a device changes its MAC address: 

• ❌ It is intentionally not recognized. 

• ❌ No start release. 

• ❌ No insecure intermediate states. 

➡️ Security over convenience. Always. 

What happens with incompatible devices? 

• Device will not be stored. 

• No permanent release. 

• No unreliable operation.
