Standard: Standard 2. Skillfulness and Health-Related Fitness. Physical education candidates are physically literate individuals who can demonstrate skillful performance in physical education content areas and health-enhancing levels of fitness.
Component: 2.a Demonstrate competency in all fundamental motor skills, as well as skillful performance in a minimum of four physical education content areas (e.g., games and sports, aquatics, dance and rhythmic activities, fitness activities, outdoor pursuits, individual-performance activities).
Artifact: Activity courses *Lifetime Activities Golf Packet* & FMS Certification (Above)
Date of obtaining artifact: 2016-2022
Reflection: During my time at SUNY Cortland, I took several activity courses. After taking these courses, I've garnered many fundamental motor and life skills needed to perform and demonstrate in the field of physical education. With each class, different skills were achieved. In addition to my activity courses, I was certified in a physical education fundamental movement screening. The screening focuses primarily on locomotion.
Golf was one of the lifetime activities that drew my attention the most. Golf requires a lot of walking. Studies prove that walking can improve cardiovascular health. Golf also improves hand eye coordination and fine motor skills. In addition to golf, I deeply enjoyed rhythm and dance. During rhythm and dance, I improved my dynamic balance and coordination. It also challenged me cognitively by having to remember steps before executing a dance. Rhythm and dance was unique in the sense that it helped me gain a better appreciation of the affective domain by having me work in a group or with a partner. Applying these team building skills was a beneficial part of the experience. During Aquatics, I learned a life skill that can help improve my cardiovascular health and muscular endurance. In inclusive activities I learned to be creative in my programming approach in order to meet the needs of all students. The FMS artifact vets competency in fundamental motor skills needed on all levels of physical education. The screening is used to test the basic movements needed specifically in elementary physical education. In knowing these skills and being able to properly demonstrate them, I can provide the best learning opportunity for my elementary school students.
From a student perspective, we expect or teachers to be able to demonstrate the fundamental motor patterns of the FMS test. Demonstrations are important for those students who are visual learners. Having an understanding of each motor pattern can help teachers create cues that aid auditory learners as they grasp the concept of each skill. The FMS screen and each of my activity classes offered me many opportunities to become a more well rounded student and eventual teacher. Both these artifacts have been fundamental in my development as a teacher because I have proven that I can perform the tasks I will ask my students to do. In the field if PE leading by example is the best way.

Component: 2.b Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness throughout the program.
Artifact: Apple Watch Physical Activity, My Fitness Pal Body Composition & Strength Training program
Date of obtaining artifact: 2016–Spring 2022
Reflection: Growing up, I always struggled to maintain a healthy weight. When I discovered MyFitnessPal in 2016, I began using it to track my calories and weight. I still use it to this day. Exercising and using the app has allowed me to maintain an average weight of 204 pounds. with 13% body fat over the last 4 years. My goal moving forward is 190 pounds and 10% body fat. As of March 2022, I have been able to reach my desired weight and maintain it thus far. I always strive to educate my students and athletes about adequate physical physical activity during the week as well as healthy eating habits. My education at SUNY Cortland and beyond has led me into the field of strength & conditioning. I have greatly benefited from the knowledge I gained working in this field. Currently, I create programs for myself, as well as my athletes and clients. Each program is tailored to the needs of each person based on functional movement assessment and initial consultation. For myself in particular, I struggle with flexibility. My program (linked below) outlines some of the pre and post workout stretches I perform for muscular balance and pliability. Lastly, I have linked my Apple Watch physical activity for Spring 2022. 150 minutes is the recommended weekly physical activity for healthy adults. My artifact proves that I exceed that time. My activities consist of weight training to enhance muscular strength, high intensity interval training to improve body composition and endurance as well as walking to promote better cardiorespiratory health.
My artifacts relate to the component above because they prove that I can create and maintain habits that align with continued health enhancing behaviors. My fitness pal tracks meals which can help me monitor how much I can and need to eat. My apple watch tracks my physical activity to help me reach my goals for calories burned.
In the field of physical education it is important to lead by example. If students note that you are the kind of person that takes care of their body, they may feel compelled to do the same. As teachers we need to remember that our jobs don't end with our lessons in the classroom. We are role models to our students. We should always strive to improve our health for the betterment of the learning community.
