American Literature, Composition, and History

Having traversed from the Age of Discovery through the expeditions of Lewis and Clark last year, we now find ourselves delving into the exciting adventures of Westward Expansion. We have just joined the Oregon Trail and will journey through until we get to the Modern Era. We are reading primary source documents from Oregon Trail Stories.

Oregon Trail

Historical Fiction

After studying Manifest Destiny, the students wrote historical fiction short stories as a means of demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of America's Great Emigration on the Oregon Trail. We then invited the classes on the Redmond Campus to join us for a Read Around as the students shared their stories with them.

Living History Day

Following our studies of the Oregon Trail, the students chose a project to share in our Oregon Trail Living History Day. Students built wagons, sod houses and log cabins. We enjoyed a variety of home cooked trail food: beans, rice, corn pudding, spelt bread and hardtack. Students brought in a cougar, bobcat and elk pelts to show some of the animals that could have been seen on the Oregon Trail. There was a display showing how children fared on the trail and toys and games (checkers, marble solitaire, a model of a game of graces) and clothes they would have worn. The students from the other classes on the Redmond Campus enjoyed experiencing a "Taste of the Oregon Trail."
