A Consequence Of Human Nature

My dad was a man who would always put himself in danger first if it meant others were spared. He always thought that humans have been at war with each other for so long they didn't know any different. He believed he could be a part of a change that brought about a generation that cares instead of hates. My only wish is that his life and sacrifice were not in vain, that what he paid with his body, mind, and soul wasn’t all for nothing.

He never failed to bring a smile to our faces on the gloomiest days. He’d always recount happier times, fun memories, and always was there to talk to whenever we couldn’t say much of anything. When mom and I were at our lowest, he would always take the time out of his day to make sure we didn't stay that way. In fact, I can’t remember a day in our lives when he had a crack in that glee of his. That’s probably why we were always so happy; his joy was potent.

When I think he will not be there to attend my graduation, or he will not be there to attend my wedding, it's hard to hold back my tears. But what gives me courage and hope is that because of him, many will have their loved ones around them at such important moments in their lives. And that is what makes me proud of you, Dad. You were always there for me, and I am sure you will always be.
