A STRONG FOCUS WITH SENSORY DETAIL
Stay focused on your topic because a great essay focuses on a moment or two. It is precise. Think of it as a SNAPSHOT or SNAPCHAT. Use imagery and detail to bring this moment to life with your writing. Dialogue works really well, too.
AN EMOTIONAL CONNECTION
Open up as you reflect on your growth and self-awareness. Word choice is important, so use words that reveal your feelings. Emotionally loaded language and descriptions will help to SHOW rather than tell your emotional connection.

Try to experiment by starting with something unexpected. Take a compositional risk here.
INDIVIDUAL VOICE
Use the first person POV (point of view) when writing your essay. YOUR voice needs to shine through in your college essay. In the best college essays, the reader can "hear" the writer. Practice this by completing lots of freewriting activities. See my BRAINSTORM BINGO on the "Getting Started" page.
