Established in 1914, the Department of Chemistry has a long-standing legacy of academic excellence, innovation, and scientific contribution. Since its inception under the leadership of its first professor, Prof. Duncliff, the department has grown into a dynamic center for teaching, research, and advanced scientific training. Over the years, 15 Heads of Department (HODs) have successfully guided its progress, and currently, a dedicated team of 20 faculty members is actively engaged in teaching and research.
The department is proudly supported by prestigious funding agencies such as DST-FIST and UGC-CPE, enabling continuous development of infrastructure and research capabilities. It caters to more than 1500 students per semester, reflecting its strong academic reputation and demand.
The department offers a well-developed and diverse infrastructure designed to support both undergraduate and postgraduate education, along with advanced research:
Five Undergraduate Laboratories, including a dedicated Instrumentation Lab
Three Postgraduate Laboratories, with specialized Instrumentation facilities
One Vintage Laboratory preserving rare and antiquated scientific instruments
One Virtual & Computer Laboratory equipped with an interactive smart panel, 15 modern computers, and high-speed broadband connectivity
Three Research Laboratories focusing on Organic, Physical, and Inorganic Chemistry
One Computational Laboratory featuring a Schrödinger Workstation for advanced molecular modeling and computational analysis
One Sophisticated Instrumentation Laboratory housing state-of-the-art instruments such as Fluorescence, UV-Visible, and IR Spectrophotometers, Microwave Synthesizer, Double Stereo Microscope, Refrigerated Centrifuge, and more—funded by UGC and DST-FIST
