Before starting my internship at Mits Creation in Thailand, I had a good background in the diamond industry, as my dad is in the diamond business. This knowledge gave me an advantage, but I still wanted the experience in the business. I was curious about how a diamond company operates on a daily basis, from inventory management to quality assessment. I also thought about what I wanted to gain from this internship, not just technical skills, but also professional experience, discipline, and a better understanding of the industry.
To make the most of my three week internship, I prepared by reviewing what I already knew about diamonds and discussing the business with my dad. I familiarized myself with the specific work Mits Creation does and what my role will include. I set goals for the internship, such as improving my attention to detail and learning about the logistics of diamond trading. Mentally, I prepared myself for the challenge of adapting to a structured work environment, knowing that consistency and professionalism would be key. I have always struggled with discipline, so this challenge could be good for me and my personal growth.
Starting the internship was exciting, but as the days went on, I realized that working five times a week in a professional setting required discipline. Some tasks were challenging, required patience and precision, while others were boring due to its repetitiveness. However, I kept going, reminding myself that this was a good opportunity to learn and grow. I gained hands on experience with inventory management, learned how to do diamond assortment more accurately, and observed the challenges of running a diamond business. Over time, I became more confident in my skills and more comfortable in this environment.
During my internship, I worked closely with diamond inventory management and quality assessment. I learned to analyze diamonds based on the 4Cs cut, color, clarity, and carat weight, understanding how slight differences affect value. Handling diamonds required precision, as even small mistakes in documentation could cause major issues for the business. Some tasks were repetitive, but I realized how crucial they were to running a successful business. Over time, I became more confident in evaluating diamonds and gained insight into how pricing and trading decisions are made in the industry. All the work I did was like a simulation run, but it helped me gain confidence, next time I ever do a diamond internship I could show off my knowledge
Looking back, this internship was a valuable experience that went beyond just learning about diamonds. It taught me the importance of discipline, there were times when I felt overwhelmed, but pushing through helped me build resilience. I also developed better work habits, such as time management and attention to detail, which will benefit me in the future. This experience increased my interest in the industry while also showing me how much effort and commitment it takes to succeed in it. In the end, it wasn’t just about working with diamonds;, it was about proving to myself that I could adapt, learn, and thrive in a professional setting and also proving it to my dad I could do this.
