Preterite vs. Imperfect

Preterite: One and done, finished actions, specific amounts of times, a clear start or stop.

Imperfect: Ongoing actions in the past. If the sentence fits the DUWIT pattern, it is imperfect:

Descriptions (physical traits, weather, age…)
Used to (ongoing, continual, repeated, or habitual past actions-- I used to dance)
Was + -ing and were + -ing (I was singing/ We were talking)
Internal (mental) processes (feeling, knowing, needing, thinking, wanting)
Time (always expressed with the verb ser)
