Union City Schools will use the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) guidelines to develop our program. The ASCA National Model divides the school counseling program into four components:
Foundation- The school counselor will develop a comprehensive program that follows all student and professional standards.
ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors are divided into three broad domains:
Academic Development- Standards guiding school counseling programs to implement strategies and activities to support and maximize each student's ability to learn.
Career Development- Standards guiding school counseling programs to help students 1) understand the connection between school and the world of work and 2) plan for and make a successful transition from school to postsecondary education and/or the world of work and from job to job across the life span.
Social/Emotional Development- Standards guiding school counseling programs to help students manage emotions and learn and apply interpersonal skills
Management- Needs assessments and survey data will be used to implement curriculum and services that will fulfill student needs.
Delivery-The ASCA National Model emphasizes that the delivery of both direct and indirect services should account for 80% of a school counselor's time.
Direct services may include: individual student planning, classroom guidance lessons, individual or group counseling.
Indirect services may include: collaboration with families, teachers, administrators, other school staff and education stakeholders for strategies for student success.
Accountability- The school counselor will use data collected to evaluate the effectiveness of the program to ensure it aligns with the vision and mission statements.
The counseling referral forms are located under the resources tab. Referrals may be made by students themselves , teachers, administrators, parents, and peers.
