Urban and Rural Language Research Workshop at U of T: Variation, Identity, and Innovation

November 9-10, 2019

From November 9-10, 2019, I attended a workshop on language research in urban and rural communities at U of T. I presented a paper on the influence of urban professional life on complementizer that (with Sali A. Tagliamonte) and participate in a roundtable on the social and psychological impacts of fieldwork alongside Stefanie Edler (University of Graz), Teresa Monsberger (University of Graz), Dragana Rakocevic (University of Graz), and Lisa Schlegl (University of Toronto). It was really exciting to hear more about fieldwork experiences in different kinds of contexts and to chat about ways we can better prepare future generations of researchers for community-based work.

Fieldwork for the Language in Later Life project is done!

After a little more than one year, fieldwork for the Language in Later Life Project (PIs: Prof. Alison Chasteen and Prof. Sali A. Tagliamonte) is done! Thanks to all of our wonderful participants as well as Lisa Schlegl, who also helped with data collection. Looking forward to the analysis stage!

NWAV 48 in Eugene

October 10-12, 2019

l presented two talks this year: One on the influence of cognitive decline on subject omission in diary style writing (with Sali A. Tagliamonte) and one on the role of word frequency on yod dropping.

ICLaVE 10 in Leeuwarden/Ljouwert

June 26-28, 2019

From June 26-28, 2019, I attended ICLaVE 10 in the Netherlands where I gave two talks - one on the use of complementizer that over the lifespan (with Sali A. Tagliamonte) and one comparing lifespan developments in spoken and written language.

Richard M. Hogg Prize

I am excited to announce that my paper "Is [nuz] really the new [njuz]? Yod dropping in Toronto English" was awarded the 2019 Richard M. Hogg Prize by the International Society for the Linguistics of English.

Science Rendezvous

Did you ever wonder what linguistics was all about? And do you live close to Toronto? If so, join me and my colleagues at Science Rendezvous on July 19, 2019! The Linguistics booth is right outside Sid Smith (100 St. George St) and we have lots of ways to get involved, including a dialect survey, a spectogram station, and lots of fun activities involving indigenous languages of Canada.

2nd Annual Buffalo-Toronto Workshop
