Vermonters have made it clear: They do not want their rural lands ripped up to make room for data centers that will drain our aquifers, pollute our waterways, and increase air pollution through massive energy needs from coal-fired power plants.
Vermont lawmakers recently passed H.727, a sweeping data center regulatory bill, but Governor Phil Scott vetoed the legislation on May 28, 2026. While there are no current data centers of this scale in Vermont, developers have made inquiries, prompting lawmakers to try to get ahead of the industry. Vermont became the first state in the nation to ban the use and sale of the toxic herbicide paraquat, which has strong scientific links to Parkinson's disease and is already banned in 72 countries around the world. Gov. Phil Scott signed H.739 into law, beginning a phased transition period leading to a total statewide ban that goes into effect on December 31, 2030.
