The initial concept for this form of communication technology began more than 400 years ago. In 1667, Robert Hooke created the string phone that sent mechanical vibration waves down a taut string or wire. This is like the tin cans on a string children play with. The first form a communicating over long distances was the telegraph, which was invented 1837.
1876: Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. Another inventor, Elisha Gray, also invented a device that could transmit speech electronically, but Graham was the one who received that patent.
1880: First telephone used in Europe and other countries besides the United States
1905: First phone with the ability to dial out rather than going through an operator
1925: First version of the rotary phone
Late 1800's and Early 1900's: In 1887, the first pay phone was invented. It was invented by William Gray and first installed in Hartford Bank. The first telephone exchanges were performed by a switchboard. Almon B. Strowger invented a telephone that could perform the first automatic telephone exchange and did not require an operator. Other innovations in this time period included the answering machine (1898), the first long distance call (1915), and the car phone (1940).

1970's - 1980's: The first cordless phones were invented. Caller ID's were introduced. AT&T invented a device that could also transmit pictures, but to due its high cost, it was not used much.
1994: Considered to be the first smart phone and touch screen
1900's: Cell phones became popular as consumers quickly discovered the benefits of being accessible while on-the-go.

2000: First cell phone with built in camera
2001: First VoIP conference call phone
2002: First color screen cell phone
2007: The first Apple iPhone
2008: First phone that used Google's Android operating system
2018: Latest version of the iPhone
2000's: The first touch screen phone was invented. Phones are now more compact and have more features than ever. Text/voice/video software such as Skype allowed people to connect in even more ways. In 2010, the cloud based system was introduced.
