Kate Ellis is established as Detective Sergeant in the Soar Valley Murder Squad. Although professionally things are going well, her home life is difficult and her relationship with Petra is under threat.
The discovery of a murdered man floating in the River Soar is the beginning of complex and challenging investigation with roots that stretch back over many years. As Kate gets pulled in by the case, things with Petra go from bad to worse.
The novel explores the emotional toll taken by  police work and follows the next stage in Kate's transformation from naive young policewoman, to cynical hard-boiled inspector.
