Smart Professional Development Goals
Short term goal #1
Skills
S- I will focus on concept over exact word use.
M- Each week I will look up practice sentences in both English and ASL and interpret them into the other. In ASL I will both sign and write down exactly what I signed and compare it with the English sentence presented.
A- I believe this goal is achievable. I am constantly doing this conversion in my head when in class or chatting in sign, this will be a more dedicated way of ensuring I’m doing it right.
R- Knowing and correctly using ASL grammar is imperative to being a strong interpreter.
T- I would like to improve my ASL grammar before the end of my first full ITP semester.
Short-term goal #2
Self Awareness
S- I will feel more confident of my ASL use in public.
M- To measure my confidence, after going to Deaf events I will count how many conversations I had that I started and note how I felt in them. The next event I go to, I’ll aim for one more.
A- I can achieve this goal; I just need to trust myself to put myself out there and separate myself from my signing ability; correcting my signs doesn’t mean they’re correcting my character.
R- Being confident in my own sign use will only help any future clients I have. If I start off nervous about interpreting, I will only notice my mistakes, and struggle to continue, especially if in a testing situation.
T- I will show up to more Deaf events and dive head-first into conversations and ask questions about any signs I don’t understand.
Short term goal #3
S- I will become better acquainted with the Deaf community of SLC
M- Each month I will schedule social events that center around the Deaf community.
A- I believe this goal is achievable. If I prioritize socializing, I can be more cognizant.
R- The only way to truly improve my ASL is by interacting more with native users.
T- I would like to implement this goal before the spring semester.
Short-term goal #4
S- I will have a better understanding of what field I would like to focus on.
M- I will check in with mentors weekly for feedback and a sit down to talk about how I am doing in these settings.
A- I believe this goal is achievable because once I start getting the experience of working in an internship, I will have a better understanding of what I would like to do.
R- Although I know I want to be an interpreter, I am still not sure of what field I would like to focus on.
T- I would like to have a better understanding before starting my second internship placement.
Long Term Goal
S- I will prepare for the Utah Professional certification.
M- I will meet with mentors and colleagues who have passed this exam to evaluate my progress.
A- If I already have my Novice certification, my Bachelor's degree, and have completed the ITP, I believe the Professional certification is the next step.
R- Professional certification will give me better work opportunities and lasts longer than the Novice.
T- I plan to get my Professional certification within three years of graduating from the ITP.
Long Term Goal
S- I will practice tactile signing.
M- I will work with CDIs and other interpreters to observe and practice tactile sign.
A- I believe if I am able to practice tactile sign, I could become more comfortable and skillful.
R- Knowing and feeling comfortable with tactile signs is important in expanding my interpreting skills.
T- I hope to improve my use of tactile sign before I take the Professional certification.
