Music, health and wellbeing
Over previous decades, musical activities such as singing, playing musical instruments, dancing, and listening to music, all have been ascribed potential to enhance wellbeing and quality of life across the life span. One important implication of this notion is that beneficial effects of music engagement is not restricted to traditional music therapy. This means that trained music therapists are not always required to achieve measurable health effects. Moreover, beneficial effects of music engagement can go beyond adjuvant psychotherapy. In other words, musical activities appear to have health potentials at physical, psychological, and social levels. In this lecture, we will consider examples of recent empirical research based on experimental and large-scale panel studies. The dynamics in these strands of work suggests that medical research has begun to adapt the notion of health effects of music engagement, which begins to transform music therapy and music as medicine. This means also to recognize both the potentials and limitations of music activities for wellbeing and health.
