At Saugerties Junior High School, I designed and implemented a creative writing unit focused on personal vignettes. This unit followed a class reading of Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga, offering students the perfect opportunity for reflective and exploratory writing about their cultural identities. The goal was to encourage students not only to delve into their own cultural experiences but also to share this meaningful aspect of their identities with their peers.
This unit was aligned with the following New York State Learning Standards:
7W3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective techniques, descriptive details, and clear sequencing.
7SL5: Include digital media and/or visual displays in presentations to clarify claims and findings and emphasize salient points.
On this page, you’ll find my unit plan, lesson plans, information about the summative assessment, and examples of student work.
