The Problem
Milton Imaging's rapid expansion requires thorough MRI safety training for new staff at its third facility. The powerful MRI magnet presents constant risks, especially with metal objects in the environment. This eLearning module addresses the need for proper patient preparation and screening to prevent serious hazards. By educating staff on MRI dangers and safety protocols, the training aims to achieve zero incidents in the MRI suite, ensuring the safety of both patients and employees.
The Solution
The Understanding Diversity and Inclusion Training directly addresses these issues by creating an inclusive environment in which all employees can freely express their identities and concerns. The training uses the Backwards Design model to ensure that the end goals of understanding, acceptance, and practical application of diversity principles are integrated throughout the course. Modules on defining diversity and inclusion, exploring its dimensions, and understanding its benefits assist employees in recognizing the value of a diverse workforce. Employees are given practical tools to help create an inclusive workplace, as well as strategies that address unconscious bias. This thorough approach provides InnovateTech's employees with the knowledge and skills necessary to establish an equitable workplace environment that promotes both personal and organizational growth.
My Process
For this training, I used the ADDIE instructional design model. I chose ADDIE because it helps me thoroughly understand what learners need, design and develop engaging content, implement the training smoothly, and continuously evaluate its effectiveness. Its step-by-step approach allows for ongoing improvements, making it one of my favorite models for creating high-quality and impactful training.
Design Document
The design document outlines key aspects of the MRI Safety Training, including a comprehensive needs and context analysis, ensuring the training meets the diverse needs of Milton Imaging staff. It emphasizes targeted goals, detailed instructional strategies, and gamified elements to enhance learning. The document ensures ADA compliance and proper attribution, adhering to copyright standards. This thorough planning guarantees a compliant, effective, and engaging training experience.
Storyboard
After creating the design document, I developed a detailed storyboard. The training uses a scenario format to engage learners, encouraging them to explore and demonstrate knowledge through drag-and-drop activities and branched scenarios. To boost participation and intrinsic motivation, learners unlock puzzle pieces as they progress, ultimately earning the title of MRI Safety Champion. A mentor character guides them, providing feedback and assistance. The course is personalized with the learner's name, making the experience more relevant and helping them apply their knowledge to real-world situations.
Style Guide
I created a style guide for this training to ensure a cohesive and professional look. Using Figma, I integrated the client's color palette and logo elements to create a visually appealing design that engages learners. Style guides are crucial in instructional design because they maintain consistency, enhance the learning experience, and ensure all materials align with the brand. By working with the SME, we created a training that flows seamlessly, making it more effective and engaging for learners.
Wireframing and Interactive Prototype
Next, I created a wireframe to visualize the course flow. After SME approval, I developed an interactive prototype to test scenarios, engagement, and interactions. Wireframing and interactive prototypes are vital in instructional design because they allow for early feedback and adjustments, ensuring the training is effective and engaging. These prototypes gave SMEs a clear idea of the training's look, feel, and effectiveness, helping to refine the final product for the best learner experience.

Results and Takaways
Creating the MRI Safety Training was an enriching experience that taught me the importance of wireframing and interactive prototypes in visualizing and refining the course. This process allowed for effective communication with SMEs, ensuring continuous feedback and revisions. I enjoyed learning about MRI procedures and found great satisfaction in designing gamified elements to enhance learner engagement. The positive impact on learners was evident through their active participation and improved understanding of MRI safety protocols.
"The wireframing and interactive prototype process was incredibly effective. It allowed us to provide timely feedback and see how the training would look and function before finalizing it." - Dr. Emily Smith
