The training was designed to take place over the course of a month, with students participating on their own time throughout the week. The training includes collaborative discussions and projects, which must be monitored by a facilitator. The course is highly interactive, with videos, interactive videos, and numerous scenario-based activities.
Audience: All company stakeholders and employees, including managers and supervisors, who must communicate with colleagues in any capacity throughout the workday.
Responsibilities: Instructional Design, Design Document, Storyboard, Graphic Design, Video Editing, Self-Narrated Voiceovers
Tools used: Articulate Storyline, Canva, Powtoon, ClipChamp , Genial.ly, Text to Speech (Amazon Web Services)
Project Features: Embedded video, Layers,States, Branching, Closed captioning, Simulations, Variables, Escape Room, Trivia Game
The Problem
A company-wide survey was conducted, asking learners about current communication practices. All stakeholders and employees participated in the survey.
The survey found that employees felt undervalued, their concerns were not addressed, accurate information was not properly disseminated, and they were unaware of the company's goals.
The Solution
The Effective Communication in the Workplace Training addresses the urgent need for better communication skills at all levels of a business, which will improve both individual interactions and the overall workplace productivity. The training provides employees with the tools they need to communicate effectively by focusing on meetings, email, collaborations, and presentations. This fosters a more collaborative and supportive work environment.
My Process
For this training, I created a visually appealing course with a consistent color scheme that uses shades of blue to promote calmness and clarity, both of which are necessary for effective communication. The design principles focused on simplicity and accessibility to cater to a diverse audience with varied skill levels and learning preferences.
On the technical side, I used Articulate Rise to incorporate advanced features like embedded videos, layers, states, branching scenarios, simulations, variables, escape rooms, and trivia games to create a fun and engaging learning environment. The use of animations, AI voice overs, and self-narrated voice overs improved content delivery by making modules more engaging and relatable.
A detailed design plan and storyboard were carefully created for stakeholder review, complete with mockup images and scripts, to ensure a transparent and collaborative development process. Special attention was given to interactive games and realistic scenarios to ensure learners can practically apply communication theories. Simulations that guide learners through tasks such as email editing and presentation design principles were critical for putting theory into practice.
Results and Takaways
Although "Effective Communication in the Workplace Training" is a hypothetical example, it was created to produce positive outcomes if implemented. Hypothetically, learners praised the practical application of communication skills in real-life scenarios for increasing their confidence and effectiveness in workplace interactions.
Creating this thorough training emphasized the importance of establishing clear learning objectives from the start to avoid content overload. In the future, it may be best to divide the training into four distinct courses to provide a more in-depth focus on each communication skill set. The process of developing engaging scenarios and interactive elements was especially rewarding because these methods significantly improve learner engagement and retention of information.
