The community is made up of the Ngati Manu Maori community, the Waikino Rd coastal community, the Pakaru Rd farming Community, and from students whose parents chose Karetu School even though they live in Kawakawa, Moerewa, Pakaraka or Paihia, or further afield.
There is excellent parental support of the school as evidenced by the turnout at school events, sports days and kapahaka. The community raised funds and built a swimming pool and a modern library entirely without Ministry support.
The community has supported some exciting EOTC ventures including Marae stays, beach/boating trips, Island camps, stays at Outdoor Education Camps, and we have now completed seven senior class “urban camps” in Sydney!
It needs to be mentioned though that the advent of Covid 19 has had a massive impact on our kura, with parents discouraged from entering the school, and to wear masks when they did. This has meant less “invasion” of our staff room, and school camps and EOTC trips have stopped until such time as Covid Restrictions are lowered or lifted.
In Karetu the well appointed Marae is the center of community activities.
The community supports a range of sporting activities including soccer, rugby, league, and netball teams. The involvement of parents and whānau is a strength of the school.
