Karetu School is a picturesque Decile 2, country school situated in the beautiful Karetu valley, 10 kilometers by sealed road from Kawakawa. The School Roll stabilised somewhat in 2021 which helped maintain five classrooms. The building of a new classroom was completed in time for the start of Term 2 and wasfollowed by an announcement by the Ministry of Education that they want to put an Enrolment Scheme in place because they are worried about Karetu School getting too big.
The whole Karetu community is treating that as a sign of success considering it is not that long ago that the Ministry wanted to close Karetu School.
We are a School that has prided itself on delivering small class sizes within a safe family-orientated environment, although with our continued popularity this is being tested with higher than expected student enrolments. The focus of everything we do is firmly upon the children and their present and future well-being.
We are a well resourced school and have been prudent in allocating funds that will not only provide for our children today but also into the future. The Board of Trustees stand firmly behind the teachers and the teaching and learning programmes they offer. This support can be evidenced by a determination to employ Teacher Aides in every classroom paid for through Operational funding when MOE agency funding cannot be secured.
Design changes provide the School with the ability to offer up to 5 teaching spaces, and also include a well resourced community built library, swimming pool, adventure playground, natural playground, two court areas, and a large shade structure that doubles as an outdoor staging area.
Our school grounds include well over an acre of bush which the children make full use of either running and playing or building huts. Our playing field is on the small-side but we make the most of it all year round.
The staff is caring, committed and professional and believe in having fun while at work. Our staffroom is a focal point for not only the staff but is often “invaded” by parents coming in to simply spend time or to watch over the children having music lessons.
Our programmes are based around not only the New Zealand curriculum document but also Enviro-schools (appreciating what we have and leading the way in sustainability), developing leadership, Tikanga Maori, recognising and providing for gifted and talented students and Assessment for Learning. Learning through Play has been a dominant part of our junior school programme for three years now and has shown a measurable growth in both socialising children for school, and in developing their oral language.
The school roll has steadily increased over the past 11 years to the point that it has actually doubled.
