Long ago, in a world where natural magic is fading, Red, a young aspiring inventor living in the middle of nowhere, is summoned by her famous grandmother, the Great Wizard Artemis, to study at the empire’s prestigious Magus Academy. But when Artemis is mysteriously murdered, suspicion falls on her loyal butler, Vincent, a cursed servant hiding his true identity as the Big Bad Wolf. Framed for the crime, Vincent joins forces with Red to clear his name and for Red to uncover a conspiracy tied to her destiny as a Sagittarius Celestial.
CHARACTERS
Red is the main protagonist of the self-titled Red. She is the current wielder of the Sagittarius Seal and finds herself trapped in the Alterworld alongside her grandmother’s loyal servant, Vincent who has been framed for Artemis’s murder. Although still a novice mage, Red possesses extensive knowledge of magic and alchemy, and she’s an avid bookworm devoted to the craft.
Red’s family history is complicated. Her mother was secretly the daughter of the Great Wizard Artemis, but born without magic and resenting the suffocating expectations of mage society she fled to the rural lands of the Iseult Kingdom. There, she met Red’s father and started a new life. To her mother’s surprise, Red inherited magical gifts, though she hid the real truth from her.
From a young age, Red wondered about her mother’s mysterious past and, by extension, her grandmother’s life. All she knew was that Artemis was a mage a fact that fascinated her. In secret, Red devoured books on magic and alchemy, collecting volumes on every subject she could find. It wasn’t until she received a prestigious invitation to the Magus Academy that she uncovered the truth about her family’s origins.
Everything changed after an attempt on her life and her grandmother’s murder. Saved by the Time Witch, Red and Vincent embarked on a journey across the alterworld and human empire to find the remaining eleven Celestials.
Personality: Socially awkward due to growing up in the middle of nowhere, Red struggles to interact with large groups and often comes across as blunt or aloof situations in which Vincent frequently steps in to smooth things over. However, talking about magic and alchemy instantly lights her up, making her almost childlike in enthusiasm. She also has a mischievous streak, often teasing Vincent by calling him “dog.” Highly intelligent, she’s rarely seen without a book in hand.
Abilities & Equipment: Red possesses the Sagittarius All-Seeing Eyes, granting her the ability to scan vast distances and see through structures. This gift makes her an exceptional marksman and archer. She wields the legendary bow and arrow, Chiron, and wears a magical protective cloak that can harden at will.
Vincent, once known as the Big Bad Wolf in his past life, is the butler and secret familiar of the Great Wizard Artemis. Their story begins decades ago, during the Great Cryptid War.
Vincent was originally created by Apollo as a weapon, a living tool designed to hunt and kill mages during the war. For a time, he terrorized the Iseult Kingdom, until Artemis was summoned to eliminate him. Their battle was fierce, but in the heat of combat, Artemis realized that the Big Bad Wolf was not a mindless beast. He was neither wholly good nor evil, just a creature fiercely protecting his friends, the forest’s inhabitants, much like humans protect their own.
During a rare moment of understanding, the two spoke. Vincent learned that Artemis herself was a soldier, forced into the war out of duty to her family. Before their final clash, he told her that if he were ever reborn, he would like to know what love and family meant and perhaps even serve under her.
Years later, a wolf pup appeared at Artemis’s door, claiming he had been drawn there by something he couldn’t explain. Though he had no memory of his past life, Artemis recognized him and took him in as her familiar, naming him Vincent. From then on, they lived peacefully in the capital, with Vincent serving as both her loyal butler and bodyguard.
That peace was shattered when Artemis’s granddaughter, Red, arrived at the Magus Academy and a mysterious assassin murdered Artemis. Vincent discovered her body and, in a rage, transformed into his wolf form to attack the killer. However, the royal guards arrived in time to see him standing over Artemis, making him the prime suspect. Branded a murderer, Vincent fled and was rescued by the Time Witch.
Now framed for the crime, Vincent is sent into the Alterworld alongside Red. His mission to fulfill Artemis' last wish, protect Red at all costs.
Personality: As Red describes him, he’s a caring butler with a filthy mouth. Often brash and cocky, Vincent is a contradictory character. At times, he’s good at reading situations and can put on a gentlemanly appearance, impressing and swooning women. But under that polished exterior is an argumentative, mischievous man who enjoys irritating people. When not masking, he often curses or says odd things. He and Red argue constantly, yet he still takes time to serve her.
Despite his attitude, Vincent is surprisingly loyal to those he cares about and often goes out of his way to help. He knows how to clean, sew, cook, and style hair. If you praise him for his work, he tries to play it off like he doesn’t care but if you look closely, you might see his tail wagging. Vincent is more street-smart than Red and constantly reads the room to prevent her from doing something embarrassing.
Abilities & Equipment: Vincent can use wind magic, often unleashing powerful gusts from his mouth. He can blow away buildings and push back enemies with ease. In addition, he possesses superhuman strength, agility, and a powerful bite
DEVELOPMENT
Red’s development has been on hiatus since 2020, though the concept was first created in 2017. Inspired after watching The Ancient Magus’ Bride and Fate, I wanted to create a world centered around whimsical fantasy and woodland mages. Another inspiration is Aesop and Brother's grim fairy tales and folktales. Over the years, however, the world evolved into something much larger and more complex.
Writing Red’s story is still part of my future plans. From the start, it was always intended to be a manga, but due to my skill level at the time, I decided to place it on hold to focus on Grimlord.
The world of Red was designed to be vast and expansive, a setting that could hold countless stories beyond Red’s own journey. Many of my other OCs live in this land as well, each with their own tales to tell. While Red’s story may not be fully explored this year, I’d still like to share the stories of others in the same universe such as Aria the Goat and The Caliban Clinic.
