Long ago, a lost moon god descended to Earth, unable to return home. Twelve compassionate individuals aided him, guiding the celestial being back to the stars. In gratitude, he granted them magical powers and a sacred gift: the Tree of Gaia.
This tree took root in a hidden garden of paradise, an eternal forest where fruit grew endlessly, time stood still, and its guardians were blessed with immortality. The Tree of Gaia was not only their reward, but also a divine offering which was earth magic meant to keep the Earth flourishing for generations.
These twelve, known as the 12 Celestials, watched over the tree while also gifted with their own magical abilities. But disagreements arose over how the world should be shaped. Virgo sought to elevate human life through magic, while Leo, angered by Virgo’s neglect of plants and animals, used the tree’s magic to aid wildlife instead. This was the first fracture between Celestials, and others soon took sides.
Over centuries, this conflict escalated. Mages and mythical beings turned against each other until the Space Witch split the world, separating their realms (the human world and the Alterworld). Yet both races continued to abuse magic, devastating the ecosystem, depleting magical energy, and leaving the land to rot. With magic in decline, they now fight over dwindling resources.
Trafficking magical beings and body parts has become normalized, while magical diseases spread unchecked. The number of mages and mythicals is dwindling, making those who remain highly sought after and sent to special academies for training, or sent into slavery.
The twelve original Celestials still exist in different ways. When a Celestial dies, their magic lingers in a descendant. Once a descendant dies the zodiac Seal then goes on to the most powerful living magic user (in the family). Across history, these descendants have held immense political power, often leading wars and shaping empires.
Now, as the world struggles to find a cure for the spreading magical plague, another crisis looms, Apollo the Leo Celestial wielder, has found a way to escape the Alterworld, and threatens to ignite another great war.
The world in Universe 1 is split between two dimensions. The Human Empire consists of the kingdoms of Gwalchmei, Iseult, Ganis, Sanoxas, and Keisus, along with the Sacred Forest and Sacred Island.
The other dimension is the mythical realm known as the Alterworld. Little is known about its regions, but secret and illegal passages are scattered across the Human Empire, granting access to it. Some known connection points include the Caliban Clinic in the Sanoxas region, the northern kingdom of Gwalchmei ruled by the Aries royal family (Aria), and the Magus Academy in the Ganis region.
Founded by the Great Wizard Artemis, the former Sagittarius bearer and grandmother to Red, the academy was established in the aftermath of a devastating war. After defeating the Cryptids, seven powerful mythical creatures created by Apollo and unleashed upon the human empire, Artemis was granted a territory west of the royal empire by the crown in recognition of her heroism.
Unlike traditional institutions, Artemis’ academy stood apart. It welcomed not only mages, but also mythicals, beings often cast aside or hunted by society. The Cryptid War had changed Artemis’ view of mythicals forever, and she became a fierce advocate for their rights, campaigning to end their exploitation in the mythical trade. While her activism earned her powerful enemies, she was also hailed as a hero by many.
Her territory became one of the few safe havens for mythicals - though the only condition for entry was that they possess a humanoid form.
The academy quickly gained renown, drawing some of the most powerful mages from both the human realm and the Alterworld. It offers a rigorous three-year curriculum, beginning with First Years and advancing through to Third Year graduates.
In the present day, with magic fading across the empire, special invitations are sent out across the land to gather the last remaining gifted individuals - those who might preserve what’s left of magic in a world on the brink of losing it forever.
