Karkonosze Mountains Flora

Although the flora of the Karkonosze Mountains has been significantly transformed by human activity, it is one of the richest and most valuable in the entire Sudetes. These mountains, despite their low height, have clearly shaped and varied vegetation layers. Due to the harsh climate, they are located even several hundred meters lower than in other high mountains (for example, the Tatra Mountains). Usually, the higher the floor, the better the original nature is preserved - however, the top and ridge parts are easily accessible and have already been significantly transformed by man.

The foothills (up to approx. 500 m above sea level) have been practically entirely turned into meadows and fields, there are only a few mixed forests. Small parts of the original type of forests occur in the vicinity of the Szklarki Waterfall and in Chojnik.

The lower montane zone (up to about 1000 m above sea level) used to be mixed forests, with a predominance of beech (buk), and now they have been mostly replaced by spruce forests (bory świerkowe). The original fragments of the lower montane zone have been preserved in the national park - in the upper parts of Chojnik and in the vicinity of the Szklarki Waterfall. The vegetation of lower montane meadows (łąki regla dolnego) is very diverse

The upper montane forest floor (up to approx. 1250 m above sea level) was made up of dense spruce forests, later partly replaced by man-planted spruces, often of lowland varieties, and thus not adapted to the local conditions. This leaded to their destruction in the late 1970s. Moreover the local forests, for years exposed to acid rain caused by industrial emission of pollutants from numerous German, Czech and Polish plants were prone to diseases.

At the upper border of the montane forest, spruces (świerki) are dwarf, shaped by the winds blowing here. They are accompanied by typical mountain species, such as the Carpathian birch (brzoza karpacka), Silesian willow (wierzba ślaska) or rowan (jarzębina).

Mountain pine floor (up to approx. 1,450 m above sea level) is a home for the dwarf mountain pine - species of mountain pine as well as herbaceous and herbaceous plants predominate here. Very interesting are raised bogs (torfowiska) with small ponds.

Alpine floor Finally, in the highest Alpine zone, herbaceous species (gatunki zielne) and rock and ground  lichens (porosty naskalne i naziemne), some of which are protected.
