Agriculture is the science, business, and art of farming.
What is Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources (AFNR)?
Agriculture is the engine behind everything! We study science, culture, and sustainability to understand the systems that provide power to every living human on earth. In AFNR, we do everything from learning about genetics and botany to training bunnies and making lei!
With a strong foundation in science, Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources is the gateway to a wide array of industries and careers! Students from the Kalani program have gone on to schools like Cornell University. There are a huge number of careers directly related to agriculture, from florist to food inspector to veterinarian to agricultural mechanic. But practically any career will connect to agriculture in a meaningful way. And it's not just careers! Many fun activities and hobbies stem from agricultural pursuits, such as gardening, fiber crafts, and cooking projects.

CTE Honors is an academic distinction conferred on students upon graduation. It demonstrates a student's persistent pursuit of academic excellence and the designation can help to improve the chances of a student gaining admission to a specific college or receiving a scholarship. To qualify for CTE Honors, a student must:
achieve a B or better on two consecutive years within the same CTE program of study (such as AFNR)
meet or exceed proficiency on a performance-based assessment for their program of study
achieve a 3.0 cumulative GPA by the end of their senior year
The National FFA Organization is the largest student-led organization in the country, with over a million members. This organization provides a dizzying array of opportunities in the form of awards, degrees, and competitive events for students who seek to showcase their agricultural knowledge and achievements. Students in any Kalani AFNR class are automatically members of the National FFA Organization, and much of the work we complete in class aligns directly with the requirements for the four levels of FFA degrees. Achieving these degrees can help to unlock further opportunities, such as eligibility for scholarships through the National FFA Organization and as a notable distinction on college admissions and job applications.
During their course work they will also compete in public speaking events, chair fundraisers, and design entrepreneurial projects.
Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE) are hands-on, real-world projects that students complete as part of their coursework. They are a critical part of any agricultural education program, at any level of high school. Carrying out SAE allows students to develop broad and deep ability in an agricultural skill of their choice. Kalani has many ongoing SAE projects within the AFNR facility, and students are encouraged to practice their agricultural skills through these projects and others.
