Our Sprouts class is a small, mixed-age grouping of three to five-year-old children. This class is limited to a group of eight children, providing the teacher-mentor with the opportunity to individualize the learning experience for each child. Our Sprouts students engage in play-based activities incorporating practical life skills, sensorial awareness, mathematics, language, science, and geographic knowledge. In addition, we incorporate inspiration from the Reggio Emilia approach which values creativity, self expression, and a sense of membership in a cohesive community of learners. Social/emotional aspects are a vital part of our curriculum approach, not just a supplemental aspect of the program. Therapist-guided social groups focus on developing mindfulness, self regulation and problem solving skills.
Much of our day is spent immersed in nature-based activities outdoors, with lots of time for free exploration and discoveries. Children have daily opportunities for open exploration and self-expression using a wide variety of artistic materials as well as opportunities to engage in self and teacher-directed learning activities on topics of interest to the children in the group. We also incorporate developmentally appropriate academic programs that help kids get ready for public school. We have lessons in language, handwriting and math. These lessons are taught in small groups with mastery-based levels rather than age based segregation. Each child also has the opportunity to work on letter recognition and phonics-based reading activities.
