My reflections about making the memrise course.
The memrise course has been quite a challenging feat for me.
MY REFLECTIONS
This course has been interesting and very challenging for me in the way of using the internet to maximize the benefits for the work which we needed to do. It has been a new level of learning both technically and language wise.
I have found it to be very interesting as well as frustrating due to limited understanding of the processes needed. This course has helped enlarge my understanding to the possibilities. That there is so much available to us to be able to develop resources which others can use to strengthen our language base.
This course has provided us with the tools we need to create countless supplies of language mechanisms for the use of our wider Cook Island Maori audience. These can go so far worldwide even to those who are intending to learn our vernacular. There is no limit.
One of the things which I felt strongly about was to have the languages of the Kuki Airani come together, with each island still retaining their own dialect but with the Rarotongan dialect as the spearhead of them all. Although others may not see this as a good idea but this has already been achieved when the Puka Tapu was first written.
To see the comradery amongst those who attended the course made it enjoyable to work in a friendly environment. It produced a positive atmosphere for those of us who attended. Seeing everyone aiding each other to achieve the production of videos and so on was very encouraging.
On the technical side of things I found it very challenging to learn the different sites on the internet and how to either download or upload information or whatever the case maybe. To be able to collect data and load into certain areas can be a bit daunting at times. But with perseverance it was possible to achieve what needed to be done. It felt good to be able to access data and upload them into the portfolio.
In producing the portfolio one can be as creative as they would like. There is so much on the internet to aide us to produce pages and data. The information gained from the course were loaded into each person’s portfolio.
Understanding the possibilities of reviving our language through the use of the internet gives me hope that there is a chance for our Cook Island Maori not just to survive but also to flourish once again.
It was exciting to see our work on you-tube being viewed by a greater audience. To see what seemed impossible come into being. To have a dream realized, a vision being fulfilled is so heart-warming.
I feel so privileged to be a part of this course and to have the opportunity to pass on what I have learnt to future generations. To see them continue the legacy of our language for many more generations to come. Unless we begin now the future of our vocab will not be assured of its posterity.
