Helios Rebellion is a project I directed with a 13 person team, the game is currenlty in progress. I am art directing, writing, and game designing for this project.
The game is a vertical slice that follows the main character Nyeema a younger miner thrown into a radicalizing revolution focused on disrupting the supply chain sending helium 3 back to the western utopia in efforts to set up a soverign nation in the asteroid belt. This story centers around the resource helium-3 that is an isotope only found in space. It takes inspiration from the humanitarian crisis in the eastern congolese mining abuse and cultural inspiration from the nomadic Amazigh people in North Africa.
The miner housing design focuses on cheap, modular space structures that can be rapidly configured into temporary cities, while still conveying a deep level of craftsmanship and interconnectedness between the miners and their environment.
The main intent of this design was to explore the structural modularity and construction of the housing while designing a home shared by a group of children. The space functions as a group home organized by the Western Colony, creating an oppressive family structure that has been imposed upon them. Despite the coldness of the vacuum and the rigid environment surrounding them, small traces of life emerge throughout the space. Toys, drawings, and personal belongings are scattered throughout the home, reflecting the joy and individuality that children can find and create for themselves, regardless of their circumstances.
This tool is designed to intercept large asteroids and extract helium-3 from them. The miners function more like asteroid fishers, navigating dangerous asteroid belts to sift small amounts of helium-3 from massive quantities of regolith in order to meet their daily quotas. The four-pronged asteroid interceptor is designed for versatility, allowing miners to capture and process large quantities of regolith while maneuvering through unpredictable asteroid fields.
