Canada – Spring 2024 🍁

I was lucky enough to experience a Canadian spring — that magical period just after the snowy season and before the summer sun fully takes over. The weather was still on the chilly side, with crisp winds and remnants of snow lingering on the mountains and ski fields, but I somehow managed to avoid the wet and stormy days that can sometimes make spring travel tricky. It was honestly perfect. Everywhere we went, the people were friendly, chatty, and genuinely welcoming — and the Kiwi accent definitely turned a few heads!

There was so much to see and do in just two weeks of road-tripping through British Columbia. We explored the bustling city streets and vibrant markets of Vancouver, soaked up the ski-town charm of Whistler, and stopped in Squamish along the way to admire waterfalls, hike trails, and take in the incredible natural scenery. The scenery along the Sea-to-Sky Highway alone is breathtaking, with dramatic mountain views, turquoise waters, and so many hidden gems along the route. Every day was a mix of city life, foodie discoveries, and nature adventures, and I loved the balance between all of it.

Hiring a car was definitely the way to go. Driving through BC made it easy to explore multiple destinations at our own pace, while also allowing us to stop whenever something caught our eye — from roadside viewpoints to cute little towns along the way. That said, it’s worth noting that Canadians drive on the opposite side of the road from New Zealand, and city intersections can be a little tricky at first, so stay alert. Road trips like this let you really soak in the landscape, and we were even lucky enough to spot wild bears roaming freely — a surreal and unforgettable experience that reminded me just how wild and beautiful Canada is.

Whether it was wandering Vancouver’s markets, sampling local foods, taking in the snow-capped mountains, or enjoying the peaceful hikes and waterfalls, British Columbia in spring truly lives up to its reputation. It’s a place I can’t wait to return to, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone who loves a mix of city culture, outdoor adventure, and jaw-dropping natural beauty. Two weeks was just the start — there’s so much more to explore!
