The K3@MIT Gathering Community Agreement
The K3@MIT Gathering Community Agreement
We, as organizers and participants, are committed to providing a productive, enjoyable, and positive experience for all participants, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, age, religion, national origin, or any other aspect of their identity. We expect that all participants will treat their colleagues with kindness and respect throughout the event, in both mathematical and non-mathematical interactions.
Almost all non-local participants are staying with someone they know in Boston. It would be disingenuous for us as organizers to extend our protections to other people’s houses, but we expect all non-local participants to be good guests and will do what we can to support our local hosts.
In more detail:
We expect you to:
Treat one another as valued colleagues, regardless of career stage or expertise in a mathematical topic.
Err on the side of professionalism: if you’re not sure whether something is appropriate or not, it probably isn’t.
Respect the boundaries communicated by other participants.
Maintain appropriate conference conduct at all times.
We appreciate your contributions to our collective environment! If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to the organizers. We’re happy to talk and support you.
What constitutes inappropriate conduct?
The following is not an exhaustive taxonomy. This was assembled by speaking to other conference organizers, and covers common inappropriate conduct which we want to emphasize is unacceptable at this conference.
Sustained disruption of discussion or activities.
Belittling or undermining your peers, especially as we work to learn new things together.
Offensive comments related to aspects of one another’s identity, such as race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental illness, neuro(a)typicality, physical appearance, body size, age, national origin, or religion. This includes comments made in jest. Stay professional.
Deliberate “outing” of aspects of a person’s identity without their consent.
Patterns of inappropriate social contact with another participant, such as assuming an inappropriate level of intimacy; unwelcome sexual attention; gratuitous or off-topic sexual images or behaviour; unwanted physical touch, etc.
Continuing one-on-one communication after you’re asked to stop.
Publication of (non-harassing) private communication without the other party’s consent.
Reporting and consequences:
If you feel someone else is acting inappropriately, either towards you or towards someone else, or you have any other concerns with respect to our community, please contact the organizers. We will make every effort to handle the situation as quickly and effectively as possible. If a participant engages in harassing and/or abusive behaviour, we will take any action which we deem appropriate up to and including expulsion from the conference.
We take all reports of harassment or abuse by all community members (including our fellow organizers) extremely seriously. We reserve the right to reject reports believed to be made in bad faith. We will respect confidentiality requests for the purpose of protecting people who have been victimized and will not name victims without their express consent.
By participating in this event, you agree to abide by the letter and spirit of this agreement in good faith and to the best of your ability.
The event was organized by Ayodeji Lindblad, Ollie Thakar, and Evan Scott. If you have any questions, please contact us at organizers-K3@MIT.edu
