The Identity of the Impostor:
Combating the Effects of Impostor Syndrome
Spring 2022
A research article in writing center philosophy which I conducted in my time at the University of North Texas Writing Center as a writing consultant.
One of the greatest challenges for students who enter a writing center is that of writing inadequacy. Even when the student in question has a long history of academia behind them, they still are plagued by this experience; and for these students in particular, this especially vicious experience is known as Impostor Syndrome. The aim of this article is to bridge the gap between research in psychology and current writing center philosophy so as to identify what the roots of impostor syndrome are and, thereby, connect them directly to practices which writing centers can use to counteract its grip on students.
