Justin D. Hagan M.A. Linguistics, 2023 University of North Texas
Background
Hi, I'm Justin, and I love words. More than that, I study the meanings of words and how certain language is perceived. Using those insights, I craft language that best captures intended tone, voice, and style.
I have been a writing tutor & consultant for 6 years, and combine my work experience with the research I did in meaning for my M.A. in Linguistics from the University of North Texas. So, not only do I have a creative sense from my work with writing, but also a keen understanding of whythe language of writing has such profound effects. My key area of research is in sound symbolism and meaning. For my undergrad Honors work, I researched how to grade synonyms for their nuanced meanings. And for my Master's work, I looked at how certain sounds may evoke different perceptions of meaning in hypothetical car model names I crafted. In short, the aesthetics of communication is my specialization.
Approach to Linguistics
As my background is largely in composition, whereas much of linguistics is invested in the form and structure of language, my interests require I take a more functional approach. That is to say, because I emphasize language as a form of social psychology, I focus on exploring how language affects people's thoughts and feelings. Questions like "how can a different word choice change how we feel about an idea?" and "what made that brand name / tagline so effective?" are the kinds of questions I have the expertise to tackle.
What questions like these have in common is that they take a microscope to how we are socialized to feel about words. And investigating these questions can deepen our creative intuitions and make communication more meaningful.
