With Truth and Reconciliation in mind, I painted a little something. My personal mission is to learn. I recognize the cruel design of residential schools, and hopefully, we never lose sight of the injustice that occurred. The past reminds us of what was real and helps us understand how events made things the way they are today. On another note, I am in complete favor of Indigenous pedagogy and the ways that knowledge is shared by elders and families. I, myself, value the lessons I’ve had from my parents, and they did not need a classroom to teach me. Learning comes from everywhere, and I want to learn more about Truth and Reconciliation in more ways. My painting focuses on an image of teaching and learning between an adult and a child. It means that an adult creates and breathes the environment for the child just as they decide what to tell and teach the child. This painting also reflects myself; I was that girl who took in the words of adults when I had nothing else. I was surrounded by the white snow, which is bordered on the corners of my painting. The snow symbolized “suffocation” and that certain beauty is also riddled by the coldest intentions. The Indigenous colors represent the warmth as I learned and was cared for by people I love. However, I included small splatters of white to recognize that there is still a journey to make amends and to honor the past.
In June 2021, the government of Canada declared September 30th as the official day of Orange Shirt Day, in remembrance of Indigenous children who had undergone the residential school system, institutional abuse, and racial discrimination.
It wasn't yet official in 2013, when it first gained awareness. I'd been in Canadian schools since 2009 so that prompted me: what did we do for Truth and Reconciliation before people started donning orange shirts? Now, certain schools provide shirts for their students and expect they would honor the day of remembrance. I'm relieved to witness the changes in school systems, even if some are small.
