Rolling in the Mud!
In 2021 we made the decision that we wanted to get into animal livestock, however we had some infrastructure changes to make. We began by completing the corral fencing around our goat and horse enclosure. This was a project that we began in 2018, but we were finally able to place the last fence post in 2022. Along with building the corral we needed to rearrange some of our structures for livestock well-being. The first move was moving an old wooden granary from its original spot in the yard to the goat enclosure. This was something that we have been wanting to do for some time now but were unable to accomplish until now. Once we moved the granary, we moved the old goat hut to the new pig enclosure. The next step was securing a hog feeder, to which we received a 60-bushel feeder on donation. This feeder has been a game changer in maintaining the health of our hogs. So, in August of 2022 we were able to purchase our first 7 hogs. After browsing for-sale listings we found a breed of hog that really caught our attention, Idaho Pasture Pigs (IPP). IPPs are a breed of hog that were specifically bred to be grazed in free range settings. Even though they were bred for this purpose, they are also still raised on grain through out the winter months. Our intention at first was to raise no more than 4 hogs, however once people began to find out that were raising pigs, our order number quickly rose to 7. The addition of hogs to our operation has been a fun adventure. The hogs are helping teach responsibilty to our children. They are actively involved in helping feed and water the hogs daily. Our children have named each pig and have enjoyed watching them grow daily.
We plan on keeping hogs in our operation for some time, so if you are looking for fresh, locally grown hogs, contact Justin on our Facebook Page!
