Justin's farm story does not start like the typical farmer's background. He did not grow up hauling hay or cleaning stalls or any of those other farm chores. Instead, he grew up as far from farm life as might be possible. He was the son of an active-duty military chaplain, so moving every three years from one state to another was not unusual. In total he lived in 7 different states before settling down in North Dakota. As a result of this lifestyle, he has had the opportunity to encounter many different people and cultures and believes that all of these experiences shaped who he is as a person. Farming is in his background, however, as he has extended family who had farmed in North Dakota. He grew up visiting their operations and credits these visits with instilling in him the passion to do the same. While in high school Justin was able to spend the summers working for his family or for state research centers, giving him a door into the world of agriculture.
Justin started by attending Williston State College, beginning his journey into agriculture and agricultural research with a two-year degree in applied agricultural sciences. He transferred over to North Dakota State University and finished with a degree in Crop and Weed Science with an emphasis on Agronomy. Upon graduation, Justin began working for the state and university system as an agricultural researcher.
Justin and Sara were married in 2016 and in the same year bought a small farm stead, rented some farmland and began farming. When they first started, they began by summer fallowing because of the equipment available to them. In their second year they decided to park the cultivator and begin a journey towards more environmentally friendly farming practices. In 2018 they planted their first intercropped field of dry pea and durum. This was the start to their journey in increasing our regenerative agricultural practices.
Both Justin and Sara firmly believe in the ability of farmers to improve the land that is being farmed by using practices such as no-till, diverse crop rotation, intercropping, and cover cropping. These are not new concepts and several of these practices are being implemented by farmers across the world. Within recent history farmers are beginning to implement these practices together to further increase their soil health. As our mission states, they are moving forward in their goal to improve practices in a more sustainable manner. Join us as we strive to educate more people about the benefits of regenerative ag and as we strive to grow our own operation.
Sara was born and raised in the area and has been a farm girl her whole life. She wanted nothing more than to raise a family and settle down on a little piece of ground. She met Justin and they did just that!
Sara grew up on a farm that raised cattle, sheep, goats, and horses. She helped take care of the animals any chance she got and was good at bottle feeding all of the baby animals. She started raising fainting goats while in high school and is still raising them to this day.
Without the support of my wife this farm operation would not be able to succeed. She keeps me stable and tells me when I have a bad idea. I cannot express my gratitude for her help and support enough! She is an amazing mother and partner!
