Undergraduate Student Initiative for Biomedical Research (USIBR)

The Junior Investigators Group

Summer program for 2020

Summer research for Undergraduates and Exceptional High School Students at the University of California Irvine, Biomedical Engineering

Due to COVID-19 we will will work virtually with our high school and undergraduate students

Objective:

This summer the Digman Lab and at the Laboratory for Fluorescence Dynamics, a P41 NIH National Center, will host selected high school and undergradaute students interested in science to cutting-edge imaging technology. Participants will have lectures given by UCI Faculty in the area of optical imaging and have the opportunity to do a "virtual-mini" research project testing hypothesis driven biological questions. These practicals are not cookie cutter hands on sessions but are intended to inspire critical thinking and test new hypothesis currently being investigated in scientific research labs.

Program Details:

Number of Students: 10-20 undergraduate community college and up to 10 high school students will be selected.

Program Length and Description: This program will run for during the months of June, July, and August

With guidance from faculty, Postdoc, and Students mentors each group of student will engage in Python or Matlab coding for their simulated research project to work on and will need completed by the end of the program. The last day each student will present their research project summarizing their results and findings. This program will allow students to have interactive computer experience and training on data collected with the Laser scanning microscopes at the Laboratory for Fluorescence Dynamics (LFD).
