Hi, welcome to Jun Han Bae's personal page!
Currently, I am a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The most recent research I am working on it is about 'Autonomous Driving System for Self Driving Cars', especially in rural road conditions.
Prior to joining UIUC, I received a Ph.D. degree from the Polytechnic Institute at Purdue University, West Lafayette in 2021. I was a member of the SMART Lab (www.smart-laboratory.org), and my Ph.D. research area was Underwater robotics. Specifically, I was developing an unmanned system to collect underwater bed-sediment samples based on the Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) and Underwater Sediment Sampler (USS).
I received an M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Purdue University in 2014 and a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Yonsei University (Seoul, South Korea) in 2011. Currently, pursuing a Ph.D. degree from Purdue. Before joining Purdue University, I worked in the shipbuilding industry called 'STX Offshore and Shipbuilding' for about two years. I was in the mechanical engineering design team, and my main role was to design the piping system of the ship's engine room.
I think of myself as a ’Mechanical Engineering Designer.’ I think, sketch, fabricate, and program to breathe a new life into the mechanical system, especially robotics and autonomous systems. We are living in 2022, and ‘Robot’ and 'Autonomous' are indispensable keywords. Beyond the keyword, the ‘Robot’ is becoming a ‘Robot-being’ with a human being. I also believe that robotics could solve many world problems by making it easier, faster, and safer for people to get things done.

One paper as a co-author for TRB 2023 has been accepted. This paper will be presented in the poster session of TRB.
Title: A Strategy for Path Planning Improvement of Autonomous Vehicles considering Users' Comfort States based on Facial Expressions Recognition
Authors: Chun-Chien Hsiao, Jun Han Bae, and Alireza Talebpour
The first demonstration of an automated driving system in a rural road environment has been successively finished. This demo was a part of the AVA (Autonomous Vehicles for All) project. Our UIUC team has collaborated with the Texas A&M team to prepare this demo.
