"Getty Unshuttered: Taking a Moment" (2023)
In the spring of 2023, Juliette Dalicano was selected for the Unshuttered Photography Intensive at the J. Paul Getty Museum. This highly selective internship supports BIPOC youth whose voices have historically been underrepresented in arts institutions, providing mentorship from professional photographers and developing participants’ technical, artistic, and critical thinking skills.
The 2023 cohort worked under the shared theme of “Taking a Moment,” with each artist interpreting the concept in a personal and meaningful way.
For Dalicano, taking a moment means pausing when faced with frustration—not to react with impulsivity, but to respond with compassion. It’s about choosing kindness, both toward others and oneself. One of the ways she practices self-compassion is by carving out time for joy—doing something just for herself, free from work or responsibility.
Her photo series captures that sentiment in action: portraits of people enjoying simple pleasures, finding stillness, or showing kindness to themselves and those around them. Through this work, she hopes to encourage others to slow down, reflect, and engage with the world more gently.
